PROTECTING CIVIC SPACE AND ENGAGING MULTISECTORAL PARTNERSHIP IN FIGHTING CORRUPTION

The project seeks to strengthen the collaboration of CSOs in working together to address corruption through appropriate policies and further seeks to influence the achievement of a secure and enhanced civic space. The program is supported by Ford Foundation.
Goals and objectives
1) To support and facilitate CSOs to gain knowledge and capacity to take up spaces particularly in public participation.
2)To support the implementation of legislation and by increasing effective dialogue between CSO, PSOs and government/EAC on target issues through the EAC Consultative Dialogue framework.
3) To strengthen CSO partnerships through mobilizing and motivating CSOs through research and information dissemination, knowledge sharing as well as through communique, press releases and different forms of civic action in partnerships across the region.
4) To increase representation and engagement of youth in EAC policy awareness implementation and integration processes.
5) To push for the adoption of National and Regional laws and standards for protecting and enabling operating environment for CSOs
ACTIVITIES/OUTPUT
- Held 4 National Dialogue Committee(NDC) meetings with the Government Agencies, CSOs, PSOs, and other interest groups
- Held 2 Youth Dialogue Forums(NDF) with the Youth Ministry, Youth Agencies, and other interest groups
- Held 3 National Dialogue Forum Preparatory meetings.
- Developed the NDF position paper and the Youth Position papers
- Held 4 meetings with MUHURI on the implementation of the project in Mombasa County
- Joined the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) working group coordinated by MUHURI and has been actively participating in the Initiatives on Anti-money Laundering/ Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT)
- Supported the Civil Forum for Asset Recovery (CIFAR) in planning for a regional training workshop on the role of sanctions in asset recovery conducted
- Supported the National Government Organizations (NGO) week 2020 celebrations in the coastal Region
- Supported 3 multi-sectoral initiatives against corruption meetings on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)
- Held 5 multi-sectoral meetings with CSRG at the PBO Summit.
- Held the first meeting on the role of EACSOF in the AfCTA Process
- Held a Special NDC meeting in regard to COVID-19 Held a Regional Webinar on the Onslaught of Civic Space in East Africa Region Held a Young Women in Business Webinar to analyze the opportunities for young women in business and share best practices on engaging young women.
- Held a Regional youth workshop (preYouthLead Summit) on the EAC Youth policy implementation and frameworks
- Participated in the National Youth Consultative Forum on Youth Priorities Implementation Assessment Framework
OUTCOMES
- Enhanced capacity of CSOs, PSOs, youth and other interest groups to engage and advocate for the implementation of National and Regional laws and policies through the EAC Consultative Dialogue framework.
- Improved participation of CSOs in the protection of civic space and the fight against corruption Increased advocacy on the operationalization of the PBO act which will create an enabling environment for civil society organizations in the East African region to operate.
- Enhanced capacity of youth to effectively participate in holding government accountable in the implementation of the EAC Youth policy.
